Today marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, a global celebration dedicated to raising awareness and taking action to protect our planet. First celebrated in 1970, U.S. Senator Nelson founded Earth Day after a major oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, inspiring him to promote environmental reform. The first Earth Day sparked a wave of change, leading to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and landmark environmental laws like the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.
Earth Day has since grown into the largest secular observance in the world, with over a billion people in more than 190 countries taking action each year.
🌱 How You Can Make a Difference Today
Here are a few ideas to honor Earth Day:
Plant a tree or start a small garden
Join a local cleanup or pick up litter in your neighborhood
Reduce waste: bring a reusable bag, bottle, or container
Walk or bike instead of driving to reduce your carbon footprint
Learn more about climate change and share what you discover
Protecting our planet isn't just a one-time thing, it's a lifelong commitment. 🌍
